Engineer occasional boredom
My kids are now 13 and 16. The best advice I can give to parents whose own kids are getting towards that age is, “Engineer occasional boredom”.
While it results in immediate groans and complaints, which quieten down surprisingly quickly, getting the kids a bit bored leads to doodles, Lego MOCs1, new jokes and much more interesting conversations.
This applies to adults too
I spent the morning in the cafe behind my house. Next door is having the fence fixed and there’s a lot of noise, so I decided to pop down to the cafe, sit in the sunshine, have a coffee, read a chapter of The 50th Law and write some ideas in my notebook.
Like the kids, I didn’t find it easy. What would be much easier is to scroll Twitter, read a few emails or the news, but once I was through the initial bit of my self-imposed boredom new and unexpected ideas started to fill that space…
