It’s all about me. Or you.
Watch out when anyone, including you, says the word, “we” when it really ought to be “I” or “You”.
The word “we” is particularly dangerous when followed by the word “should”.
“We should get in touch with…”.
“We should think about…”
“We should organise…”.
Yes, sure, but who should? Why? And when?
Own it
Talking a lot about what “we” should do makes the speaker seem like they’re contributing and authoritative but it actually avoids responsibility and it’s an excuse for doing nothing. “I said we should do that!” they may exclaim afterwards. Yes, you did, but as the story goes, Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it1.
Useful alternatives to, “We should…” are, “I will…” and, “Will you…”.
Whatever you think ought to be done, own it. Or don’t. The worst is to carelessly leave it hanging.
