After the update
If you’re a startup investor and you’ve done your encouraging and you’ve hit reply to all, then what? What can you then do that might lead to success for you as an investor?
One thing to try is to sit with a piece of paper, no internet, and think.
I try to answer the following:
What are the top issues (my concerns for the company, not the CEO’s)?
What could be improved in the update?
What is not clear in the update?
How is the CEO spending their time? Is this the right allocation?
What skills does the CEO need and how can I help them acquire them?
What is the single biggest priority for CEO?
What are the top three priorities for the team?
What is the riskiest assumption in the business in the coming 90 days?
What will the company need to look like when it needs to do the next fundraise or exit?
The above needn’t be conveyed back to the CEO, but by thinking through the questions I hope to become better investor.
Pondering those questions might also help me figure out what’s going on in the company that’s not in the update.
