Above: Dinner with Guy Spier (Sept 2019)
It was from Guy Spier that I first learned about ‘modelling’. Not the catwalk type but modelling some of the traits and behaviours of people you admire. For Guy that was Warren Buffett. For me, Chris Sacca.
Chris Sacca is the proprietor of Lowercase Capital, a Venture Capital fund in the USA. I discovered Chris in September 2012 when he was interviewed by Jason Calacanis on his podcast This Week in Startups, or TWiST. For me that interview of Chris, spread over two episodes here and here has, more than anything else, helped shape my thinking when it comes to building relationships and trust with entrepreneurs, being helpful to them and then one day investing in their companies.
With this in mind I wanted to share that 2012 interview and some other Sacca resources that have helped shape my thinking over the years:
TWiST 291 with Chris Sacca, here.
TWiST 295 with Chris Sacca, here.
The Tim Ferriss Show (#79) with Chris Sacca, here.
Forbes: How Super Angel Chris Sacca Made Billions, Burned Bridges And Crafted The Best Seed Portfolio Ever, here.
Other resources I’ve found formative in the last decade:
Guy Spier: "The Education of a Value Investor" from Talks at Google.
12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B. Peterson.
The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers by Ben Horowitz.
Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel.
The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder.
One day maybe I’ll have dinner with Chris (hopefully not for $650,100 though).
