Part V
Each (or rather, almost every…) Friday I’ll share three things:
Something I’ve read.
Something I’ve heard.
Something I’ve observed.
Read
Joe White is leading the British charm offensive in Silicon Valley by Brendan Bordelon.
It’s often all too easy to criticise the UK Government, especially with all this week’s squabbling, however what government can do is attract smart and effective people with the credibility to get to the right people and keep chipping away to make a difference.
“London, as it builds a fresh new regulatory apparatus apart from the EU, believes that a “nuanced” approach to regulation can lure top tech talent and tons of investment to the U.K. — especially on artificial intelligence”.
It would seem that Joe White is one of those people.
Heard
Me! I was on Andy Hart’s Maven Money Personal Finance podcast here.
I spoke about:
The origins of 9others, which I started with Katie 11+ years ago, all with the aim of building a trusted network to help the network. The 9others network has since grown to 45+ cities, 500+ events, 5,000+ people... and 1 book.
The ups & downs of running the co-working space I had in King's Cross.
The path to angel investing — being helpful without the expectation of getting anything in return & building good, trusted relationships with great founders — all inspired by Chris Sacca. I still listen to this a few times a year.
I shared some book recommendations including:
And we talked about my new book with Katie,
.
Observed
Eight speakers, eight minutes, eight ideas that could change the world. That’s how ID8, hosted at Kindred by its founder Anna Anderson, is billed.
Rory Stewart spoke at the first ID8 last year about his amazing idea: plant lots of English oak trees — and it was such a good idea that I immediately bought some oak trees online (4 for £16 — bargain) and planted them near one of my running routes (see the Twitter thread about that here).
I was one of the speakers and shared 8 stories in 8 minutes for the ID8 TogethernessFest. You can read about some of them in ‘Find your 9others’ — signed copies available here or regular copies on Amazon here.
The other speakers shared their ideas, initiatives and businesses relating to mental health, homelessness, creativity and making good connections.
